Newcomer women to Canada earn 30-40% less than Canadian-born women and immigrant men, with an average income of $26,700. They are more likely to be unemployed or work part-time. In fact, there is a gap of 5,600 newcomer women in Metro Vancouver who could be self-employed, but aren’t due to lack of financing, access to a network, and language barriers.
This new scholarship program will support newcomer women by providing 50-75% of Groundswell program tuition.
Groundswell, Vancouver’s alternative business school for social entrepreneurs, and Helder Ventures, an impact investment firm, are committed to empowering underrepresented entrepreneurs and growing the local impact ecosystem. The two organizations are partnering to offer scholarships for newcomer women to Canada to give them the confidence, skills, tools and space to find their unique gift and put it to work for themselves and for their community.
Groundswell programs will help immigrant women define, validate and launch a small business. Women will also connect to an outstanding network of mentors and advisors, and get access to founder-friendly seed capital.
