What a night!
Another packed house came to see the emergence of a vision we share: an economy that works for people, ventures that make our communities healthy and vibrant, ordinary people that can make a living doing what they love.
We are so proud of these 12 "Groundswellians", a group with diverse backgrounds and a mosaic of ambitions. They have worked so hard together over the last 6 months to dig deep into their dreams and ground them in reality, smiling and sweating to build ventures from what were mere ideas just 6 months ago. You did it! But this showcase is just a threshold, and we will be here supporting each other tomorrow, and in the coming months and years....
Our ask to you:
If you know someone who wants to make the world a better place through their work, please share Groundswell with them - we're recruiting for the September 2016 cohort now! You can invite them to an upcoming Info Session, too.
"Social ventures and innovation is not easy...and then I come to an event like Groundswell and I am reminded that social good can come from anywhere: from bedroom based scrap yards to delicious baby food to innovation 26 years in the making to marketing and consulting firms to big beautiful bottles of fermented gut health. I walk away feeling inspired and optimistic and hopeful and I want you to hold onto that feeling as well. This is what social good feels like. Always hang onto the WHY of your project - that's what you don't compromise on. Congratulations to cohort 4 and all the alumni here tonight!" - Dave Doig, Director, Grants and Community Initiatives, Vancouver Foundation
"This has truly been a transformative experience over the last few months." - Kate Walker, Chirp - Healthy Eats for Growing Peeps.
"Behind the cafe doors, there is a movement building." - Lyn Brooks, Circle of Eagles Lodge Mobile App
"What is happening at Groundswell is really needed. It's about creating thriving and healthy communities with cooperative values. For us, what's more important than building [credit union] membership is building the ecosystem of impact deliverers because of all the follow-on effects. Thank you to Groundswell and the whole community for what is turning out to be a wonderful and large ecosystem!" - Liz Lougheed Green, Director, Business and Community Development, Vancity. Watch Liz talk about the evolution of Groundswell's "crazy" idea at the 3rd Groundswell Showcase here
"...Jefery Fernando [MatterForms], saving the environment one sexy upcycled belt at a time..." Mel Heibert, ImpactFull
To our greater community for the support, for the new people in the room for their curiosity, to the people who spread the word about what Groundswell is doing and help grow this ecosystem of positive action for communities, economies, and ecologies.
To volunteers from the alumni network, with special thanks to Amanda Slater and Samita Manhas, and community members Paolo Fernoza and Marie Schoen - thank you for making the event a smash success!
To Joe Fossella, the Old Fish that still swims, who welcomed us to the territory of the Xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations with a beautiful song. Joe does great work with Warriors Against Violence, a small organization doing big, incredibly important work healing the effects of violence and restoring traditional values in the aboriginal community. Show your support and donate to the Warriors Against Violence gofundme campaign!
